Easter 2026: Nighttime church services banned in one of Ukraine’s regions

6 April 08:50

Additional restrictions have been imposed in the Kherson region for the period of Easter and the days of remembrance due to the deteriorating security situation. Specifically, this includes a ban on religious services in places of worship and the surrounding areas during curfew hours, as well as restrictions on visiting cemeteries, unless it involves funeral processions. This was announced by the head of the Regional State Administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, following a meeting of the Regional Defense Council, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

In effect, this ban means that nighttime services on Easter in the Kherson region will not be permitted if they fall during curfew hours.

Separately, the authorities have also banned the blessing of offerings in the streets, which is also an important part of Easter traditions for many believers.

What exactly has been banned in the Kherson region

According to official reports, the following restrictions will be in effect in the Kherson region:

  • a ban on religious services in churches and adjacent areas during curfew hours;
  • a ban on the blessing of Easter baskets and other offerings in the street;
  • a ban on visiting cemeteries, except for funeral processions.

In other words, this is not a complete ban on religious life during Easter, but rather a restriction on mass gatherings and religious activities in the highest-risk settings. This primarily applies to nighttime hours, open spaces, and places where large crowds may gather.

Why were these restrictions introduced?

The Kherson Regional State Administration directly links the ban to the deteriorating security situation in the region. Due to constant Russian shelling, authorities are asking people to avoid large gatherings on Easter and during memorial days. That is why the decision applies to churches during curfew, cemeteries, and street blessings.

What about cemeteries on days of remembrance

In the Kherson region, there will also be a ban on visiting cemeteries unless it is related to a burial. This is an important decision, as memorial days are traditionally accompanied by large-scale visits to cemeteries. In wartime conditions, such gatherings are considered an additional risk to civilians.
