Drinking alcohol while losing weight is possible, but there are nuances – Mandziak

Alcohol can slow down the process of losing weight and provoke breakdowns due to loss of control over eating. At the same time, small doses will not have a critical impact on weight. The main thing is to observe the measure. Fitness trainer and nutritionist Viktor Mandzyak told the "Komersant Ukrainian" YouTube channel about this in an interview .

“The effect of alcohol on body weight is both direct and indirect. There are many mechanisms involved. The first mechanism is that alcohol reduces behavioral control. If a person restricts himself or herself in calories, behavioral control deteriorates under the influence of alcohol. This can lead to breakdowns. People under the influence of alcohol become impulsive,” the expert explained.

According to him, even a small dose of alcohol can reduce self-control, and drinking cocktails or dessert wines adds extra calories.

“Alcohol is quite high in calories. One gram of ethyl alcohol contains seven calories. There are 230 calories in 100 grams of vodka. And if alcohol is consumed together with drinks containing carbohydrates or fats, the caloric content increases even more. And where there’s alcohol, there’s a snack. And this is usually not a chicken breast. It’s something high in calories and tasty,” he added.

At the same time, Mandziak emphasized that a complete rejection of alcohol is not a prerequisite for weight loss.

“We can leave a measured amount of alcohol without a negative impact on body weight. Americans think in terms of shots: a shot is about 15 grams of ethyl alcohol. In glasses, it is a glass of 150 grams of wine or 50-70 grams of spirits. For a woman, a little less, for a man, a little more. This is what you can afford every day without adversely affecting your health and figure,” he summarized.

It should be reminded that the issue of combining alcohol and diet remains controversial. Some people completely exclude alcohol while losing weight, while others are convinced that moderate doses do not harm the figure. Experts emphasize that it all depends on the amount, frequency, and type of drinks.
