Trade imbalance between Germany and China

One of the key topics of the visit was the growing trade imbalance. According to official data, Germany imports twice as many goods from China as it exports to the PRC.

China has become Germany’s largest trading partner, ahead of the US. Merz called this dynamic “unhealthy” and stressed the need for more balanced economic relations.

Geopolitical context

Merz’s visit comes amid calls from G7 leaders for Beijing to use its influence on Moscow to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.

China, for its part, is trying to position itself as a reliable economic partner for Europe amid cooling relations between the EU and the US.
