Pensions and salaries may be delayed this summer in Ukraine, says an economist

Ukraine may face serious difficulties in funding social benefits as early as this summer. Economist Oleg Getman made this statement in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to the expert, the key problem is that a significant portion of the expected funding depends on Ukraine’s fulfillment of conditions set by international partners. At the same time, parliament is failing to pass the necessary decisions, which jeopardizes the receipt of funds.
“If parliament does not begin voting on all those bills—and there are already about 20 of them—that are important for our country, are anti-corruption, and support European integration, we will not receive the second large tranche of funds from the IMF. The deadline for this budget issue has shifted from spring to summer only because the IMF has already begun disbursing the first tranche. If the necessary bills are not passed, we will truly have no funds to finance social services, healthcare, and education as early as this summer,” he warns.
According to Hetman’s assessment, the consequences of the budget deficit will be felt first and foremost by those who depend on state payments: internally displaced persons, recipients of social assistance, as well as public sector employees.
“The first to feel this will be those who receive funds from the state. These are IDPs, recipients of social assistance, as well as those whom the state pays salaries—educators and medical workers. Payments to these categories of people may be delayed or partially canceled,” the economist adds.
According to Getman, without increased parliamentary activity and the fulfillment of conditions set by international partners, financial pressure on the state will only intensify.

As a reminder, MP and Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada’s Finance Committee Danylo Getmantsev stated that in April, Ukraine may face a shortage of funds to finance expenditures. The state is already using resources allocated for the second half of the year.
