Blackout on 11 June: how many hours will there be no electricity

11 June 2024 12:13

On Tuesday, 11 June, the period for applying hourly rolling blackout schedules (HRS) across Ukraine was extended. The reason is unfavourable weather conditions, according to [Kommersant] citing information from Ukrenergo.

As a result, Ukrainians will have no electricity in their homes from 14:00 to 23:00.

The reason is that electricity consumption in the heat wave continues to grow: people use air conditioners in their homes, at work and in public places.

At the same time, Ukrainian power plants are unable to generate as much electricity as they did before the attacks due to extensive damage. Imports and emergency assistance from European countries are being sought to overcome the deficit in the power system. However, due to the scale of the damage, these measures are not enough to maintain the balance in the power system.

Situation in the energy sector on 11 June

The Ministry of Energy reports that the unfavourable situation in the country’s energy sector is due to

  • the heatwave, which provoked the increased use of air conditioners and fans both at home and in Ukrainian workplaces
  • bad weather. As a result, about 41,000 subscribers in 125 settlements in Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Sumy, Chernihiv and Cherkasy regions lost power;
  • shelling by the Russian Armed Forces. In Kharkiv region, an overhead power line of a regional power company was disconnected as a result of hostile shelling. As a result, the substations and the household consumers connected to them lost power. In Donetsk Oblast, overhead lines of a power company were disconnected at night as a result of shelling of the territory of an energy company. As a result, electricity production at a local wind farm was reduced.
