At a meeting of the parliamentary energy committee,Energoatom’s acting chairman Petro Kotin said that the company plans to put new nuclear power units under repair on Saturday. This means that blackouts will resume soon. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Interfax-Ukraine.

“We now have eight power units in operation. For two days there are no restrictions because we have taken two power units out of repair (on 26 and 27 May), but in two days we will have another unit under repair, and then, I think, Ukrenergo will introduce restrictions,” Kotin said,

– kotin said.

According to him, the units that are planned to be taken out for repairs will be returned to operation in two months.

As reported, according to Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko, all nine nuclear power units available to Ukraine (total capacity of 7.8 GW) will be in the system by winter.

The reason for the restrictions

Russian troops have repeatedly attacked energy infrastructure facilities in Ukraine this spring. In particular, at night and in the morning of 8 May, according to the Ministry of Energy, Russian forces attacked electricity generation and transmission facilities in six regions – Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Vinnytsia.

Due to the power shortage, Ukrenergo then imposed restrictions on power supply for industry and business, but also warned that blackouts for household consumers were possible.

The reason for the restrictions is an increase in electricity consumption during the cold snap. The capacity of Ukrainian power plants is insufficient due to the effects of five missile and drone attacks by Russia on the Ukrainian power grid since 22 March.
