Restoration of the Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant in Kyiv: timing and consequences of the attack

5 February 21:05

On February 3, the Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant in Kyiv suffered serious damage as a result of a nighttime strike by Russian troops. This was reported by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The following weapons were used during the attack:

  • Zircon and Onyx anti-ship missiles,
  • Iskander-M and S-300 ballistic missiles,
  • X-22 and X-32 cruise missiles.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, this strike was targeted at the energy sector and set a record for the number of missiles launched — 521.

Consequences for residents

The Darnytska Thermal Power Plant supplied heat to some of the buildings in the Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts — more than 1,100 high-rise buildings. On the morning of February 3, water was drained from the heating systems in these buildings to prevent them from freezing.

The city authorities organized additional heating points:

  • in the Darnytskyi district — 5 mobile boiler rooms where people could stay day and night;
  • in the Dniprovskyi district — 4 additional stations;
  • The State Emergency Service is additionally deploying 36 stations in Darnytskyi and 27 stations in Dniprovskyi districts.

Lists of addresses are available on the websites of the district state administration, city authorities, and the State Emergency Service.

Repair timeframe

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that repairs to the Darnytskyi Thermal Power Plant will take at least two months, provided there are no new attacks.

This thermal power plant is key to supplying heat to a large part of the right bank of Kyiv, so its restoration is a priority for the city authorities.

What is known about the attack

The Russian military’s actions in this nighttime attack were combined and large-scale, indicating a deliberate strategy to damage critical infrastructure.

Such strikes significantly complicate the city’s preparations for the heating season and create additional risks for the population.

The city authorities and the State Emergency Service are organizing temporary measures to heat residents, but the situation remains critical until the thermal power plant is fully restored.
