Energy recovery: how donor power plants will help Ukraine

4 March 02:57

Ukraine has agreed with its European partners to transfer equipment from decommissioned power plants to restore damaged thermal power plants. Latvia, Germany, Austria, and several Eastern European countries may become donors of energy equipment.

This was announced by Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Which countries will help restore Ukrainian thermal power plants

According to the minister, during an energy meeting with international partners, agreements were reached on the transfer of equipment that is no longer used in European power plants.

Among the countries ready to help Ukraine are:

  • Latvia
  • Germany
  • Austria
  • other Eastern European countries

Ukrainian technical teams have already visited several energy facilities in these countries to assess the equipment.

What equipment can be transferred to Ukraine

In particular, Ukrainian specialists worked at the Riga Thermal Power Plant in Latvia, which is currently being decommissioned. Parts of its structure are planned to be used to repair Ukrainian thermal power plants.

Ukrainian energy experts are also

  • analyzing the condition of two coal-fired thermal power plants in Germany;
  • inspecting two thermal power plants in Austria;
  • negotiating the transfer of equipment from old gas and coal-fired power plants in Eastern Europe.

The components and parts obtained will help to restore Ukrainian energy facilities more quickly.

Why Ukraine needs donor power plants

Russian missile and drone attacks have damaged a significant part of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

The transfer of equipment from old European power plants will make it possible to:

  • repair TPPs and CHPs faster;
  • restore electricity generation;
  • prepare the power system for the next heating season.

According to government officials, such decisions significantly reduce repair time, as the equipment can be used as donor components.

When will the power grid stabilize?

Experts predict that the situation in the power grid may improve as early as April, when electricity consumption will decrease due to the end of the heating season.

However, the government is also preparing for new risks, as attacks on energy infrastructure may continue.

For this reason, Ukraine has already begun preparations for next winter, and the National Security and Defense Council has approved plans to increase the resilience of the power system for most regions of the country.
