In an interview for the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian", political analyst Ihor Chalenko commented on a possible meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin and outlined the goals that the parties may pursue during such a dialogue.

According to the expert, Putin will seek to further block or slow down the provision of military assistance to Ukraine and avoid new sanctions from the West.

It is about stalling for time as much as possible, as well as attempts to impose his proposals voiced during the meeting in Alaska, Chalenko noted.

The political scientist also emphasized that the Kremlin is currently counting on the continuation of the war until at least mid-2026:

“Putin is actually measuring the war about six months ahead. He has seen the green light from China, reacted to the position of the West, and, accordingly, is marking this time horizon for himself. There are signals that he is ready to fight by the end of the first half of next year,” he said.

Commenting on Trump’s possible involvement in the settlement of the war, Chalenko suggested that the US president is seeking to use his “diplomatic inertia ” after the successful summit in Sharm el-Sheikh.

Trump wants to press Putin on the wave of success in the Middle East. This may involve organizing a trilateral meeting with President Zelenskyy. At the same time, according to available information, Putin has not yet agreed to such a meeting,” the expert noted.

According to Chalenko, Trump’s key goal in the event of trilateral talks may be to achieve a ceasefire with further steps to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.
