US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland has announced her intention to resign.

This is stated in a statement by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken published on the website of the State Department, Kommersant Ukrainian reports

“Victoria Nuland has informed me that in the coming weeks she intends to step down as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, a role in which she has carried out President Biden’s commitment to put diplomacy back at the centre of our foreign policy and to revitalise America’s global leadership at a crucial time for our nation and the world,” said Blinken.

Secretary Blinken stressed that over the past three years, she has “led the department on everything” from addressing crises around the world, particularly in the Middle East, to expanding and strengthening U.S. alliances and partnerships in Europe and the Indo-Pacific.

“But diplomats and students of foreign policy will be studying Victoria’s leadership on Ukraine for years to come. Her efforts have been indispensable in standing up to Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, building a global coalition to ensure his strategic failure, and helping Ukraine move closer to the day when it can stand on its own two feet – democratically, economically, and militarily,” Blinken said.

It is reported that Nuland’s duties will be temporarily performed by Under Secretary for Management John Bass.

Who is Victoria Nuland?

Victoria Nuland is a career diplomat with over 30 years of diplomatic experience.

In 2011-2013, she worked as a spokesperson for the Department of State, and in 2013-2017 , she served as Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.

Ukrainians know that in December 2013, during the Revolution of Dignity, she met with the then President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and visited Maidan Nezalezhnosti, where she treated the protesters to cookies. This fact was later actively used by Russian propaganda to show that the Revolution of Dignity was allegedly organised and sponsored by the United States.

In 2019 , the Kremlin blacklisted Nuland and banned her from entering Russia.

Nuland’s last visit to Ukraine as US Deputy Secretary of State was in January 2024, during which she discussed the supply of GLSDB bombs with a range of 150 km to Ukraine.
