Wind breakthrough: Ukraine can increase the production of “green” electricity 5 times
31 July 22:02
Ukraine has a strong wind energy potential, and plans to realize it are already gaining momentum. According to the study “Green Renewal of Ukraine,” by 2030, the volume of electricity production from wind could increase almost sixfold – from 3.3 TWh in 2020 to 17.5 TWh, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Such ambitious dynamics reflects not only technical capabilities but also the country’s strategic intentions to strengthen energy independence and attract investment in renewable energy.
Wind generation is expected to grow annually. By the end of 2025, production should double to 6 TWh, with an installed capacity of 2,185 MW. In 2026, further growth is expected – up to 9.1 TWh and 2,885 MW, respectively. The most active dynamics is planned for 2027-2028, when production volumes should reach 12.2 TWh and 14.9 TWh, respectively. By 2030, the capacity will increase to 6,124 MW, which will ensure the production of 17.5 TWh per year.
There are 16.5 thousand km² of land suitable for wind energy projects in Ukraine, an area that exceeds the territory of Montenegro. This opens up opportunities for the construction of hundreds of new wind farms in different regions, primarily in the southern and eastern regions. This potential allows not only to cover domestic needs but also to export green energy to the EU.

Wind energy development has several key advantages:
Attracting investment. The renewable energy sector remains one of the most promising for private capital, including international capital. Given the scale-up plans, project financing is expected to intensify.
Reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Wind energy is a key element in reducing energy dependence on traditional sources, especially Russian gas and coal.
Job creation. Thousands of new jobs will be created in the process of designing, building and operating wind farms, especially in remote regions.
Energy security. Decentralized electricity generation from wind allows for resilience in the event of damage to large generating facilities or restrictions on electricity imports.
According to the National Renewable Energy Action Plan, the government has a clear vision for the sector’s development until 2030. The priority is to maintain a stable tariff environment, simplify licensing procedures and attract international technology partners.
The Ukrainian Wind Energy Association notes that the transition to renewable energy sources is not only necessary within the framework of climate commitments, but also economically justified. Especially in the context of post-war economic recovery.
Wind energy is no longer just an alternative, but a new strategy for Ukraine’s energy independence. And if the plan is fully implemented, by 2030 Ukraine will receive not only wind energy, but also the wind of change in its economic landscape.
