Authorities and mobile operators prepare for power outages: thousands of base stations switch to generators
22 January 20:53
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced a meeting with representatives of mobile operators. The main goal of the talks is to ensure stable communications throughout the country, even in the event of prolonged power outages.
This was stated in a post by the prime minister on Facebook, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to her, uninterrupted mobile communications are considered a critical element of life support for people and communities.
What has already been done
According to Svyrydenko, mobile operators have significantly strengthened the backup power supply for their networks:
- more than 15,000 generators have been purchased for basestations;
- more than 8,000 base stations are already operating on generators.
This should allow the network to continue operating even during large-scale and prolonged power outages.
What is the current focus
Particular attention was paid at the meeting to the issue of ensuring sufficient fuel reserves for the uninterrupted operation of generators. Without this, backup power sources may prove ineffective in the event of prolonged energy crises.
What is promised to operators and subscribers
According to Svyrydenko, mobile operators are working to ensure that Ukrainians have the following under any power supply conditions:
- stable voice coverage;
- the ability to send SMS messages, even if other communication services are limited.
