Kyiv authorities did not approve the holding of the Equality March in the subway and called on the organisers of KyivPride to find another location for the event, as it is dangerous to do so in the subway. This was reported by the press service of the Kyiv City State Administration, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“Human rights and awareness-raising activities aimed at promoting equality are important even under martial law. However, the Kyiv metro is a dual-use facility and part of the city’s critical infrastructure, and it is always a high-risk area due to the limited space, train schedules and high passenger traffic. In order not to endanger the participants of the event and passengers, to avoid possible provocations, the city authorities cannot allow the Equality March to take place in the subway,

– the Kyiv City State Administration reported.

If the event is held, the organisers will be responsible for compliance with all security measures.

The authorities also denied the statements spread by some Telegram channels about the alleged suspension of subway traffic during the Equality March and the allocation of UAH 2 million from the city budget for its organisation.

“KyivPride has previously stated that the Equality March will take place on 16 June in the metro and that the organisers are in contact with the National Police, Kyiv City Police and the city military administration to ensure the safety of the participants.

What is the Equality March and when was it first held?

The Equality March will be held as part of Pride Month. The history of this movement dates back to 1969, when the Stonewall riots took place – a movement for the rights of the LGBTIQ community.

Pride Month was first declared in 1999 by US President Bill Clinton. Since then, June has become a month when society draws attention to the problems faced by the LGBTIQ community.

Pride Month in Ukraine

KyivPride plans to organise and hold not only the Equality March in Kyiv. On Sunday, 9 June, the capital will host a Charity Education Festival. Visitors will have access to lectures, workshops, consultations, entertainment and a fair of LGBTIQ-friendly businesses. The festival will also raise funds for Ukrainian soldiers and defenders. Everyone is invited to the Closer art centre (31, Nyzhniyurkivska St.) at 13:00.
