Authorities warn of lengthy restoration of Berlin’s power grid after blackout
11 January 06:11
It will take several months to fully restore Berlin’s power grid after the January blackout.
This was reported by the operator Stromnetz Berlin, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The company specified that after the restoration of electricity supply to the southwestern districts of the German capital, a second temporary high-voltage line was put into operation on January 7. It should increase the reliability of power supply in the affected area. The connection was completed on schedule and without additional disruptions.
Both temporary lines will be used until the network returns to its original configuration. Stromnetz Berlin noted that preparations for major restoration work have already begun, but the repairs themselves will take several months. This timeframe is due to the serious damage caused to the infrastructure as a result of the arson.
On January 3, about 50,000 households and about 2,000 businesses in Berlin were left without electricity due to a fire on an overhead cable bridge. The police immediately considered the version of deliberate arson, which was later confirmed. Responsibility for the sabotage was claimed by the radical left-wing anarchist group “Vulkan,” which has been active in Berlin and Brandenburg for over ten years.
Power supply to the affected areas was fully restored after five days. In total, the outages affected about 100,000 residents of the southwestern part of the German capital. The Berlin authorities declared a state of emergency, and the investigation of the incident was transferred to the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Karlsruhe, which deals with cases related to threats to national security.
