Volkswagen is recalling nearly 100,000 electric vehicles due to issues with battery modules, according to Ukravtoprom, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
“Volkswagenhas announced a global recall of 74,579 electric vehicles on the MEB platform, as well as 19,452 Cupra Born vehicles, due to potential defects in the high-voltage battery modules. This decision affects the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz, and ID.Buzz Cargo models manufactured between February 2022 and August 2024 at the plants in Zwickau and Hanover,” the statement reads.
According to the German regulator KBA, defective modules may reduce driving range and trigger warning signals, and in rare cases, there is a risk of fire. However, no cases of injury or property damage have been reported at this time.
The company assures that the safety of drivers and passengers remains a priority, so the recall is being conducted as a precautionary measure. As part of the service campaign, a software update and a thorough inspection of all battery modules are planned. If any defects are found, the affected components will be replaced with new ones.
The company explains that the battery cells for these models were supplied by external manufacturers, but the modules were assembled directly by Volkswagen. The company does not specify the exact causes of the discrepancies, noting only that the issue relates to quality control during the assembly phase.
The recall covers a wide range of popular electric vehicles from the Volkswagen and Cupra brands, and the company recommends that owners check whether their cars are affected by the campaign to avoid any unexpected situations on the road. This is yet another example of how electric vehicle manufacturers continue to improve the safety of battery systems and monitor the quality of components.
