Parliament adopts law on rebooting the Bureau of Economic Security

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine today supported in general the draft law No. 10439, which reboots the Bureau of Economic Security. This was announced by MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"

“The document was voted in favour by 239 MPs.

According to the MP, the bill has been agreed with Ukraine’s international partners.

“The text has been agreed with our partners. It includes the independent selection of the new BES Chairman, re-certification and personnel selection. With the participation of foreign experts and Ukrainian business. It could have been better, but they did a good job,”

– zheleznyak wrote.

Bureau of Economic Security

The BES was established on 12 May 2021 as a body to counteract offences that infringe on the functioning of the state’s economy.

The main tasks of the Bureau of Economic Security of Ukraine are as follows:

  1. identifying risk areas in the economy by analysing structured and unstructured data;
  2. assessing risks and threats to the economic security of the state, developing ways to minimise and eliminate them;
  3. submitting proposals for amendments to regulatory acts to eliminate the prerequisites for creating schemes of illegal activities in the economic sphere;
  4. ensuring the economic security of the state by preventing, detecting, suppressing, and investigating criminal offences that infringe on the functioning of the state’s economy;
  5. collecting and analysing information on offences affecting the economic security of the state and identifying ways to prevent their occurrence in the future;
  6. planning measures to combat criminal offences under its jurisdiction;
  7. detecting and investigating offences related to the receipt and use of international technical assistance;
  8. drawing up analytical conclusions and recommendations for government agencies to improve the efficiency of their management decisions on the regulation of relations in the economic sphere.
