Republican Donald Trump has won the US presidential election and will return to the White House in January 2025 after a four-year break. In total, he received 277 electoral votes, which exceeds the 270 votes needed to win.

Psychologist’s explanation of the strong reaction of Ukrainians

In an exclusive commentary for Kommersant Ukrainian, psychologist Valentin Kim explained why Ukrainians are so interested in the election results in the United States and other major countries. According to Kim, observing political processes in such powerful countries has become a “historical trend” for Ukrainians.

“For a long time, our population has been watching these events with great enthusiasm, because we realize that our personal lives – both political and economic, and sometimes even physical – depend on the choice of a political leader in countries like the United States,”

– he said.

Kim also emphasized that Ukraine cannot be independent in the face of war and economic instability, as we depend on many factors – arms supplies, finances, diplomatic status and pressure. Therefore, this interest is absolutely justified.

According to the psychologist, the emotional reaction to the US election is also related to the constant nervous tension experienced by society due to the ongoing war.

“The third year of a full-scale war, the second decade of the active phase of the war – all this causes exhaustion. We feel very tired and have a strong desire to return to a more comfortable state. However, there is also a subconscious understanding that this is impossible,”

– Kim explained.

In fact, according to him, at the level of social psychology, Ukrainians are at the stages of accepting the new reality, and this is manifested through various emotional reactions: someone is stuck in the phase of anger, someone is at the stage of bargaining, and this all accumulates, which ultimately leads to powerful emotional explosions.

Kim also drew attention to the high level of psychological trauma experienced by Ukrainians because of the war.

“The level of traumatization is very high now, and it concerns not only the direct victims of the war, but also those who have experienced displacement, loss of loved ones, or changes in life circumstances. We have a high level of diseases, including cancer, autoimmune diseases, and all of this is somehow related to the war,”

– said the psychologist.

He emphasized that amid this traumatization, Ukrainians are looking for any event in the global world that could give them hope and some reassurance.
