The leaders of the European Union have decided to suspend Georgia’s accession to the EU. This was announced by the EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Gerczynski, according to "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Sova.
According to the diplomat, the decision was made on 27 June at a meeting of EU presidents and prime ministers in Brussels.
“I’m sorry to say this, but they also agreed to suspend the process of Georgia’s accession to the European Union,”
– gerczynski said.
The ambassador stressed that this decision is clearly stated in the conclusions of the European Council and urged to read the document carefully. He explained that the key factors that influenced this decision were:
- Unclear intentions of the current Georgian government for the leaders of the European Union.
- The adoption of the law on transparency of foreign influence, which is seen as a step backwards in the country’s democratic development.
- Anti-Western and anti-European rhetoric, which is incompatible with the declared goal of joining the European Union.
“Unfortunately, at the moment, Georgia’s accession to the European Union has been suspended. This is really sad and painful,”
– pawel Gerczynski concluded.
Georgia recently adopted a law on “foreign agents” that copies the relevant Russian provisions. When a special body declares a citizen a foreign agent, any references to him or her or his content must be marked with appropriate labels and inscriptions. Foreign agents in Russia are restricted in their ability to earn money and some civil rights.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the document is aimed at “protecting Georgia from Ukrainisation”.
