The new film by Ukrainian director and soldier Oleg Sentsov , Real, will be screened for the first time at the 59th International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic). This was reported by the company Arthouse Traffic, "Komersant Ukrainian" writes
As you know, with the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Oleg Sentsov joined the Defence Forces and fought on the southeastern front. In the summer of 2023, he accidentally filmed one of the battles on his tactical camera when his APC was hit by the enemy. Oleh was in a nearby trench and, using radio communications, tried to organise the evacuation of a part of his unit, which was under fire, almost without ammunition, to a position codenamed “Real”.
This episode became the basis of the documentary.
“‘Real’ is not a film in the classical sense. It is a piece of life during the war, which was filmed by accident, but which shows its true face without any decorations or falsehoods,”
– Oleg Sentsov comments.

The film Real is a Ukrainian-Croatian co-production. The producers are Oleg Sentsov (Kray Kinema), Denis Ivanov (Arthouse Traffic), Mike Downey (Downey Inc), Boris T. Matić and Lana Matić (Propeler Film). The film was created with the support of the European Solidarity Fund for Ukrainian Films, the Documenting Ukraine Project initiated by the Institute for the Humanities (IWM, Vienna), the FILMBOOST programme of the Deutsche Filmakademie in cooperation with the NGO Docudays.
The Karlovy Vary Film Festival is a reputable ‘Class A’ festival, one of the most popular in Central and Eastern Europe. The film will be screened as part of the Special Screenings programme. The festival will run from 28 June to 6 July.
