Lviv will be the first city to test the 5G network. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing several interlocutors in the telecommunications market.
The fact that Lviv will start testing the 5G network can probably be explained by the fact that the permission to launch such a network largely depends on the extent to which 5G equipment can affect the operation of military networks. In the west of the country, away from the frontline, it is still easier to conduct the relevant tests.
If it is clear that the equipment does not affect the work of the military, then the project will be extended to Kyiv and Odesa.
As the Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov said late last week, the government has adopted amendments to the resolution on the use of radio frequencies and is launching 5G network testing in three cities of Ukraine.
“The pilot will last for 2 years and will take place in two stages. During the tests, the NCCC and the Ukrainian State Center for Radio Frequencies will check whether 5G equipment does not affect the operation of military networks,” the minister explained.
According to him, the resolution will also provide more flexibility for operators – 2100 MHz frequencies can now be used not only for 3G, but also for 2G or 4G technologies. And the termination of the use of 694-862 MHz frequencies for analog and digital television will free them up for mobile communications.
Among the advantages of the new technology for Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov noted that 5G is capable of transmitting data 10 times faster than 4G, so it creates new opportunities for exchanging large amounts of information at ultra-high speeds.
As for the pilot project, experts believe that the new technology is likely to be deployed at several base stations at first, rather than covering the entire city. Nevertheless, users will have the opportunity to connect to the 5G network in the testing locations.
