How do businesses and households get energy loans? Details of financing

11 March 2025 21:45

Over the past nine months, Ukrainian banks have provided more than UAH 14 billion to finance projects to restore energy infrastructure. These funds are aimed at modernizing generating capacity, purchasing equipment, and ensuring the resilience of the country’s energy system, which has suffered significant losses due to Russian attacks, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports, citing the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

According to the NBU, this amount includes both business loans and credit limits that allow companies to quickly purchase energy equipment.

Main areas of financing

Banks provided funds to implement various projects aimed at strengthening energy infrastructure and reducing dependence on the centralized energy system.

1. Gas-piston cogeneration units

About 40% of the loans disbursed were for the purchase of gas-piston cogeneration units. The total capacity of such plants financed between June 2024 and March 2025 exceeds 219 MW. They play an important role in providing autonomous power supply to large enterprises, hospitals and critical infrastructure.

2. Solar power plants (SPPs)

Solar energy is another priority area. Banks have financed the construction of solar power plants with a total capacity of 162 MW. This is an important step in the decentralization of energy supply, as such plants can operate independently of the general grid and reduce the load on the state power system.

3. Diesel and gasoline generators

Due to the ongoing attacks on the energy infrastructure, financing of diesel and gasoline generators remains particularly relevant. With the loans issued, Ukrainian companies purchased an additional 124 MW of backup power, which will help ensure a stable power supply in the event of new attacks on critical infrastructure.

4. Energy supply for households

In addition to supporting businesses, banks also finance lending programs for households. In February 2025, individuals received 558 loans worth UAH 105 million for the installation of alternative energy sources, and a total of 6,266 loans worth UAH 836 million have been issued since June 2024. These funds are mainly used to purchase solar panels, battery systems and backup generators for households.

Which banks are involved in financing

Currently, most loans for the restoration of energy infrastructure are issued by state-owned and commercial banks that have special financing programs for businesses and individuals:

  • “Oshchadbank and PrivatBank provide preferential loans for the development of autonomous energy sources.
  • “Ukrgasbank actively lends to renewable energy projects and finances businesses in the field of environmentally friendly technologies.
  • Commercial banks, such as Raiffeisen Bank, Credit Agricole, and FUIB, offer financial instruments for businesses that are switching to independent energy sources.

Given the regular shelling of energy infrastructure and the need to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security, the banking system will continue to support the financing of the restoration and modernization of energy facilities.

It is expected that by the end of 2025, the total volume of lending in this area may increase to UAH 20 billion, and the share of renewable energy projects will increase significantly.
