Dyeing Easter eggs is a traditional part of Easter celebrations. In recent years, Ukrainians have been using natural dyes. The classic variant of dyeing is onion husk, but in this article, we will look at some new and popular methods that will help you create original and bright Easter eggs at home.
How to dye Easter eggs with turmeric and cardamom
This year, the trend is to dye Easter eggs in a delicate olive colour, which can be obtained through the use of turmeric and cardamom tea.
Ingredients:
- 5-6 white eggs;
- 20 g of turmeric;
- 30 g of cardamom tea.
How to prepare
Put the eggs in cold salted water, add turmeric and cardamom. Put the pan on the fire and bring to a boil. After boiling, cook for about 20 minutes.
Remove the eggs and pat them dry with napkins or paper towels. At first, they will be pale, but after they are completely dry, they will turn a bright olive colour.
To get an interesting “dragon egg” effect, leave them in the solution after turning off the heat and let them cool. After drying, brush the eggs with shine oil.
How to dye Easter eggs with karkade
This method of dyeing has been popular for several years now, as almost every housewife has the ingredients needed to prepare the solution at home. As a result, you will get Easter eggs of a rich dark blue colour.
Ingredients:
- 5-6 white eggs;
- 50 g of karkade tea;
- 750 ml of water;
- 1-2 tbsp of vinegar 9%.
How to cook
Pour the karkade tea into a saucepan, cover with boiling water and let it brew for 2-3 minutes. Add the vinegar, stir and add the pre-boiled eggs.
Cover and leave for 8-10 hours (you can leave it overnight). However, to get a very light shade, it will be enough to leave the eggs for just 30 minutes. After dyeing, place the eggs on a paper towel; you can leave a thin film of broth on the eggs or wipe it off to get a lighter colour. If you wish, you can brush the finished Easter eggs with shine oil.
To make the paint more evenly applied, wipe the eggs with alcohol, wash them with a kitchen sponge or baking soda solution before boiling them.
How to dye Easter eggs with beetroot
Dyeing Easter eggs with beetroot is a fairly new and no less interesting method. Using this recipe, you will be able to dye your eggs pink.
Ingredients:
- 5-6 white eggs;
- 2-3 beetroot;
- 1 tbsp of 6% apple cider vinegar.
How to prepare
Grate the beetroot or grind it in a blender, add the apple cider vinegar and mix. Place the pre-boiled eggs in the mixture and leave for about 1.5 hours. Remove and dry with paper towels.
How to dye eggs with wine
This method became very popular last year because you end up with dark blue eggs with a purple tint that have a very bright shimmer. The crystals that give the eggs their shimmer are formed because sweet wine contains sugar, which turns into crystals after evaporation.
Ingredients:
- 5-6 eggs of any colour;
- red wine;
- 2 tbsp of vinegar (optional).
How to cook
Put the eggs in a saucepan and cover with red wine so that it completely covers the eggs. Cook over high heat for about 10 minutes until cooked. Do not forget to turn on the extractor hood or open a window, as the wine will evaporate and fill your home with the characteristic aroma of alcohol.
After cooking, transfer the eggs to a smaller container and pour the rest of the wine over them. Leave the eggs overnight to allow time for the colour to absorb and for the crystals to form, which will give them their characteristic shimmer.
If you’re short on time, you can add vinegar to the cooking process. In this case, boil the eggs over medium heat and leave the pan on the fire for another 15 minutes after boiling.
How to dye Easter eggs with red cabbage
This method is also quite easy to prepare, and as a result, you will get Easter eggs of a sky blue colour.
Ingredients:
- 5-6 white eggs;
- red cabbage;
- 1 tbsp of vinegar;
- 1 tbsp of salt.
Method of preparation
Put eggs in cold salted water, add chopped red cabbage and vinegar. Bring to a boil and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring the solution with the eggs from time to time.
Then leave the eggs in the solution for 5-6 hours. Dry them with paper towels and rub them to create an interesting pattern.
A bonus option for decorating Easter eggs
To get interesting gold or silver inclusions, you will need
- pre-boiled and dyed eggs;
- gold or silver potala;
- raw egg white.
Method of preparation
Pre-boil and colour the eggs. Brush the cooked eggs with the raw egg white and put a sheet of potato on them. For convenience, do not grease the entire egg at once, but rather apply the protein gradually and immediately place a sheet of potali on the greased area.
Remove any excess fat with a dry sponge or toothbrush. Let the eggs dry and you’re done!
