Japan intends to join the NATO initiative that allows the supply of American-made ammunition, equipment, and other resources to Ukraine.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the NHK website.
Several NATO representatives told the TV channel that Japan is expected to officially announce its intention to contribute to the initiative in the near future.
Officials specified that Tokyo will allocate funds exclusively for non-lethal weapons, which may include radar systems and body armor.
“Even non-lethal equipment is important for Ukraine,” said one NATO representative, adding that Japan’s participation in the PURL initiative is a significant step forward.
Alliance representatives also added that Japan has already informed several NATO members and Ukraine of its plan.
PURL program
It should be recalled that after Donald Trump returned to the US presidency, the country reduced its aid to Ukraine and did not allocate new aid packages in the previous format.
At the same time, in July 2025, the US and NATO launched the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program. It provides for the supply of American weapons to Ukraine at the expense of European countries. Thus, Kyiv can receive air defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and other weapons.
In September 2025, the first deliveries of military equipment under the PURL program arrived in Ukraine.
At the end of December 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that more than 20 countries, namely 24, had already joined the PURL initiative.
