The European Union is thinking about providing Ukraine with a loan that will be secured by the frozen assets of the Russian Federation. This is reported by Politico newspaper with reference to the proposal of the European Commission sent to the member states of the association, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to the newspaper, the loan could reach €140 billion. On September 26, European ambassadors will discuss the EC’s initiative, and then it will be discussed at a meeting of EU leaders in Copenhagen.
on September 10, EC President Ursula von der Leyen said that EU countries need to urgently work on a new solution to finance Ukraine’s military response based on Russian assets. The head of the EC stressed that the EU does not intend to confiscate Russia’s assets frozen in Europe, but uses them to issue loans in the form of reparations to Ukraine.
At the same time, this proposal was criticized in Belgium. Budget Minister Vincent Van Petegem called the initiative vague and noted that Belgium has consistently opposed the confiscation of sovereign assets and demands an even distribution of risks among European countries.
