EU agrees on mechanism for refusal from Russian gas
10 December 2025 15:12
The European Union at the level of permanent representatives has agreed on the final compromise text of the regulation on the complete rejection of Russian gas by the end of 2027 as part of the REPowerEU plan.
This was reported on Wednesday, December 10, by the press service of Denmark, which holds the presidency of the EU Council until the end of 2025, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to its representative, 25 of the 27 EU countries have approved the text of the law, including the deadlines for the EU countries to completely abandon LNG and pipeline gas from Russia, penalties for non-compliance with the deadlines, as well as a section on the complete rejection of Russian oil.
Permanent embargo on Russian gas and control over its compliance
This law, unlike the sanctions against Russia, which can be lifted under certain conditions, means a permanent embargo on Russian gas and includes strong mechanisms to monitor its compliance, the Danish representatives explained.
In addition, unlike sanctions related to the EU’s foreign policy, trade measures do not have to be approved unanimously by all countries. It is known that Hungary and Slovakia do not support the EU’s intention to completely abandon Russian gas, as their economies still depend on lucrative gas contracts for the purchase of pipeline gas from Moscow.
The agreement is pending approval by the European Parliament and the EU Council
The agreement on refusal from Russian gas will be published during the day on December 10. Now the European Parliament has to vote on it, and then the EU Council will formally approve it.
