EU closes skies to private flights of Russians

As part of the 14th package of EU sanctions against Russia, Russian individuals, companies and entities will also be banned from private flights in the airspace of EU member states. This was reported by EUObserver, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

This includes business jets used by wealthy Russians to fly to Europe.

The new ban includes any flights in which people from Russia, as well as Russian citizens and companies, can “determine the place and time of take-off and landing”.

The EU document cites flights to transport Russians “to certain holiday destinations” as examples, as well as flights by which companies “transport their employees to business meetings” in the EU.

The new package of sanctions also imposes a ban on transactions with certain financial institutions and cryptocurrency providers registered outside the EU. This ban applies to those entities that facilitate transactions that support Russia’s defence industry. In particular, this includes the export, supply, sale, transfer or transport to Russia of dual-use goods and technologies, sensitive items, goods for warfare, firearms and ammunition.

These measures are part of the EU’s comprehensive approach to limiting Russia’s financial capabilities and its ability to circumvent existing sanctions.

However, the EU still needs Russian gas very much: the new sanctions for the first time affected it, but did not hit it.
