The Euro-Atlantic Vector in Question: What Possible NATO-Russia Contacts Mean for Ukraine
1 December 10:24
Ukraine may be deprived of the path to NATO membership after a series of agreements between NATO member states and the Russian Federation.
This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to CNN.
“The meeting was very focused, and the most problematic aspects of the peace proposals were discussed in detail,” a CNN source said, hinting that little progress may have been made in some areas.
It is noted that one of the most “problematic aspects” of the initial US peace proposal was the provision that Ukraine should formally abandon its desire to join NATO.
However, a CNN source says that the negotiators discussed a possible scenario in which Ukraine would be effectively barred from joining the military alliance through agreements that would have to be agreed upon directly between NATO member states and Moscow.
“Ukraine will not be forced officially, in the legal sense, to abandon this aspiration,” the CNN source added.
At the same time, it is reported that if the United States reaches an agreement with Russia on a bilateral basis, or if Russia wants to receive certain guarantees from NATO on a multilateral basis, Ukraine will not be involved in the decision-making process.
The final decision on what will be a very delicate compromise has not yet been made, and it will ultimately be made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the CNN source emphasized.
As a reminder, yesterday, November 30, the United States and Ukraine held new talks in Florida to discuss the key points of Trump’s peace plan.
After the meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the parties had made progress, adding that the negotiations were complex.
National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, who heads the Ukrainian delegation, informed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the results. He noted that there has been significant progress in promoting a decent peace, and said that the positions of Ukraine and the United States have come closer. Zelenskyy confirmed this data, saying that the work would continue.
Meanwhile, media reports say that Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will travel to Moscow today to continue negotiations, but with the Russian side.
