Europe faces a fuel shortage as early as April: an alarming statement from Shell

25 March 07:57

Shell CEO Wael Sawwan stated that Europe could face an energy shortage as early as next month if the fallout from the conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt fuel supplies. This was reported by Reuters , according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Why Europe is facing an energy crisis

The conflict in the Middle East, which has already affected global jet fuel supplies, is the source of these risks. Diesel and gasoline could be next in line, especially ahead of the summer travel season in the Northern Hemisphere.

The war has also damaged key energy infrastructure and nearly paralyzed shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass.

Savan noted that the countries of South and Southeast Asia were the first to feel the effects, but as early as April, the problem could spread to Europe.

German Economy Minister Katharina Reiche also warned that an energy shortage in Europe is possible by late April or May if the conflict does not end.

Energy security has become a matter of national security

Wael Sawan emphasized that states must view energy as a strategic resource.

“Without energy security, there can be no national security,” the Shell CEO emphasized.

The company is already working with governments in various countries to help them:

  • increase energy reserves,
  • optimize procurement,
  • prepare for potential disruptions.

When Europe may face a shortage

According to energy experts’ forecasts, risks may materialize:

  • in April 2026;
  • in late spring, if the war drags on;
  • during peak summer fuel demand.

German officials are also warning of a possible shortage in May.

What could help avert a crisis

Analysts believe the situation could be stabilized by:

  • increasing strategic reserves;
  • diversifying supplies;
  • developing LNG infrastructure;
  • long-term energy policy planning.

At the same time, experts emphasize that there is no quick fix to the problem.
