The European Union is preparing a plan of sanctions against the US over Greenland

The European Union is developing a plan for retaliatory sanctions against American tech giants in case the administration of US President Donald Trump attempts to annex Greenland.
This was reported by the British newspaper The Sunday Telegraph, citing sources, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to the plans, Meta, Google, and Microsoft could be subject to restrictions. Measures against social network X, American banks, and financial institutions are also being considered. At the very least, the closure of American military bases on EU territory is being discussed.
In January, the US president openly declared his intention to establish control over Greenland. According to him, Washington will act “whether they like it or not” and is ready to achieve its goal “either by fair means or foul.” He called control over the island a matter of national security, stating the need to prevent a possible occupation of Greenland by Russia or China.
The situation around Greenland
It should be recalled that some Republicans in the US Congress have openly criticized President Donald Trump’s plans for Greenland, especially his hints at the possible use of force to gain control over the island.
Senator John Curtis stressed that the Trump administration should “stop threatening Greenland.”
Trump has repeatedly and publicly expressed his intention to bring the island under US control. Tensions surrounding Greenland intensified after a successful operation by American special forces in Venezuela in early January 2026, during which dictator Nicolas Maduro was captured.
After that, Trump again raised the issue of Greenland’s strategic importance for the security of the Western Hemisphere, emphasizing the island’s importance to the US.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt noted that the president and his advisers are considering “various options for acquiring Greenland,” adding that the involvement of the US Armed Forces remains one of the possible scenarios.
At the same time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ruled out a military invasion similar to the operation in Venezuela, stressing that the US does not plan to seize the island by force.
