For the truth to the last breath: Victoria Roshchyna awarded the Order of Freedom

Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna, who died in Russian captivity, was awarded the Order of Freedom.

This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the presidential decree.

“For civic courage, patriotism, selfless defense of the sovereignty and independence of the Ukrainian state, constitutional rights and freedoms, I hereby decree: To award the Order of Freedom to Roshchyna Viktoria Volodymyrivna – human rights activist, TV journalist, military correspondent (posthumously),” the decree reads.

Victoria Roshchyna was a Ukrainian journalist who died in Russian captivity. She was born in 1997 and began her career in the media at the age of 16. Victoria specialized in crime, human rights and litigation. She has worked with a number of Ukrainian media outlets, including Ukrayinska Pravda, Hromadske, Radio Liberty, Censor.NET, UA:Pershyi, and Ukrainian Radio.

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, she has been covering the situation in the temporarily occupied regions. In March 2022, while performing an editorial assignment in Berdiansk, Roshchyna was detained by the Russian military. After ten days of captivity, she was released, forced to record a video message in which she was forced to declare that she had no claims against the occupiers.

On July 27, 2022, Roshchyna left Ukraine for Poland. From there, she planned to get to the temporarily occupied territories through Russia. The last time she got in touch was on August 3, 2022, after which she went missing. In May 2024, the Russians admitted that they had detained Roshchyna.

The death of Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchyna was reported on October 10, 2024. The Russian Ministry of Defense sent a letter to the journalist’s family stating that she had died on September 19.

on April 24 this year, it became known that Roshchyna’s body was returned to Ukraine. According to the results of the examination, Roshchina’s body showed numerous signs of torture and ill-treatment. She is missing some parts of her body, has visible abrasions and hemorrhages on various parts of her body, a broken rib and possible traces of electric shock. She lost up to 30 kg of weight.
