The Russian ruble has recovered ground against the dollar and strengthened against the Chinese yuan after US President Donald Trump warned of imposing “very severe tariffs” on Russia if a peaceful settlement is not reached within 50 days. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Reuters.

As of 18:05 Kyiv time yesterday, the ruble weakened by 0.2% to 78.10 per US dollar after reaching 78.75 during the day, according to LSEG data based on over-the-counter quotes. Since the beginning of the year, the ruble has strengthened by about 45% against the dollar.

Against the Chinese yuan, the most traded foreign currency in Russia, the ruble strengthened by 0.8% to 10.87 after weakening by more than 1% on Friday.

Did Trump play along with Russia?

On Monday, Trump announced new arms shipments to Ukraine and threatened sanctions against buyers of Russian exports, expressing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the lack of progress in ending the war in Ukraine.

However, Trump’s statement that he was giving Russia another 50 days to make peace with Ukraine pleased both the Russian and international markets.

“Trump’s speech was below market expectations. He gave 50 days during which the Russian leadership can come up with something and continue the negotiation track. Besides, Trump likes to postpone and extend such deadlines,”

– commented analyst Artem Nikolayev of Invest Era.

In addition, Trump has slightly changed his biggest threat, which he is supposed to implement after these 50 days – a statement about tariffs against countries that buy Russian oil. Previously, these statements mentioned a 500% duty that the US would impose on goods from such countries, but yesterday Trump spoke of “at least 100%.”
