Some of Ukraine’s allies have begun discussing the possibility of ending the full-scale war. However, there are concerns that such a move could lead to a premature ceasefire and have a negative impact on Kyiv, reports "Komersant Ukrainian" reports with reference to Bloomberg.
Officials are increasingly seriously considering how to implement the cessation of hostilities in practice.
Western officials say that it is up to Ukraine to decide on negotiations and that no pressure is being put on President Zelenskyy. However, the Ukrainian leader has publicly stated that any territorial concessions would be unfair, and Russia is not going to restrain its demands and goals. In this regard, the prospect of real negotiations still remains distant.
In turn, some officials are seeking to find a diplomatic solution to the impasse. Zelenskyy intends to seek NATO and EU membership, economic and security agreements, and more advanced weapons. However, there are concerns that after any deal, Russian President Vladimir Putin could use the slightest weakness to his advantage. In addition, it will be difficult for Zelenskyy to sign an agreement that includes territorial concessions unless Russia changes its goal of complete subjugation of Ukraine.
Some of Ukraine’s allies believe that after the election, the new president will have more political freedom to strike a deal. At the same time, questions are being raised about continued US support for Ukraine and the rise of the far right in Europe.
According to Bloomberg, the divergent opinions among Western governments are caused by Putin’s threats of escalation if Ukraine uses weapons against the Russian home front. Some supporters of a diplomatic solution believe that Putin’s threats can be addressed through this route, while others want to increase the supply of weapons.
