A Russian Tu-22M3 long-range supersonic bomber that took part in a nighttime missile attack on Ukraine and crashed in Russia’s Stavropol Territory was shot down during a DIU operation in cooperation with the Ukrainian Air Force. This was reported by the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
The DIU noted that the enemy Tu-22MZ aircraft was shot down at a distance of about 300 kilometres from Ukraine using the same means that had previously hit the Russian A-50 long-range radar detection and control aircraft.
“As a result of the hit, the bomber was able to fly to the Stavropol area, where it crashed and crashed,” the statement said,
– the statement said.
The Defence Intelligence showed a video of the operation and added that this was the first successful destruction of a strategic bomber in the air during a combat mission during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“There will be a just retribution for every war crime committed against Ukraine,”
– the intelligence agency added.
A representative of the Defence Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate, Andriy Yusov, told Radio Liber ty that after the downing of the Tu-22M3 strategic missile bomber, another Russian aircraft was forced to turn around in midair.
“The other plane that followed it was forced to turn around. This means that a number of missiles were not fired at Ukraine,”
– Yusov said.

The GUR representative said that it was a certain repetition of the operation to shoot down the A-50 long-range radar tracking aircraft.
“In general, the operation was a certain repetition, taking into account, of course, the operation of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine to shoot down the A-50 aircraft that took place recently. Yes, the distance this time was even greater. We are talking about a distance of about 300 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. This is truly a landmark operation and a landmark result for Ukraine… In fact, no miracle weapons were used here. These are old known methods. But modified by Ukrainian specialists,”
– Yusov said.
He also added that the downing of the strategic bomber could reduce the threat to some Ukrainian regions.
“After the destruction of the A-50 and now, after the destruction of the strategic aircraft, at least the intensity of missile attacks, as far as airborne missiles are concerned, in the direction of Odesa region may decrease for some time,”
– said the DIU representative.
As you know, last night, the Russians carried out another massive attack with missiles and drones against Ukraine. One of the Tu-22M3 bombers was shot down and crashed near Stavropol. It is also known that at least one crew member was killed.
On 23 February, the Ukrainian Defence Forces shot down a second Russian A-50 aircraft. According to media reports, this was done with the help of a Soviet S-200 air defence system.
