“Common sense has lost”: Lviv mayor cancels decision to start school year on 19 August

Following the Cabinet of Ministers’ decision to start the school year on 2 September, Lviv has decided to cancel the start of school on 19 August, as previously planned. Mayor Andriy Sadovyi decided that Lviv schoolchildren would start classes along with everyone else, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

As a reminder, the Cabinet of Ministers has determined the beginning and end of the new school year in secondary schools. According to the government resolution, the school year will start on Monday, 2 September, and end on 30 June 2025.

“We accept and will implement this decision. Lviv schoolchildren will start school along with everyone else. What do I think about this: common sense has lost, democracy and decentralisation have lost too. But no one seems to want that. Those who make decisions are responsible. I doubt it, but I hope that the Cabinet of Ministers has information about what the winter will be like and that the training will take place without any force majeure,”

– the Lviv mayor wrote on Facebook.

Sadovyi reminded that the city’s winterisation headquarters recommended starting the drills on 19 August precisely because there was a risk of a power outage.

“In times of war, we must be flexible and quickly adapt to new circumstances. It is a pity that not everyone understands this. But this is definitely not a reason for the development of internal misunderstandings,” Sadovyi concluded.

It should be noted that in June, the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) recommended that universities, colleges and schools start the academic year in August and hold classes in the warmer months of the year.

In early July, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi announced that the 2024-2025 school year would start two weeks earlier, on 19 August. This was due to the difficult situation in the power grid.

A real debate erupted under Sadovyi’s post: some parents welcomed the decision, given the foresight and the possible difficult winter.

However, another part said that people are on holiday during this period, and such decisions should not be announced so late.
