Special representative for Belarus: what is known
According to the president, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is already preparing candidates for the appointment of a special representative.
Zelensky emphasized that:
- Ukraine needs a more active policy towards Belarus;
- it is necessary to strengthen work with the Belarusian community in Europe;
- Ukrainian interests must be represented at the official level.
Special attention will be paid to working with communities in countries that are under Russian influence or do not have complete freedom.
Strengthening diplomacy in Europe and beyond
The president also announced the strengthening of Ukraine’s diplomatic presence in Europe and other regions of the world.
“Ukrainian interests must be represented at the official level and in communication with communities in countries that do not yet have freedom or are under Russian influence,” Zelensky said.
According to him, the activity of the state and its citizens is the key to achieving results in the international arena.
Meeting with Pavlo Klimkin
As part of preparations for personnel decisions, the president met with former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, who headed the Foreign Ministry in 2014-2019.
Zelensky said that he had proposed to the former minister “areas of possible further cooperation” and stressed the importance of the experience of diplomats who have already proven themselves in defending Ukrainian interests.
What this means for Ukraine’s foreign policy
Personnel changes may mean:
- a reformatting of certain diplomatic areas of work;
- the intensification of Ukraine’s diplomatic presence in EU countries;
- expansion of the international coalition supporting Ukraine.
Official appointments and specific candidates are to be announced after the completion of procedures at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
