Zelensky announces revision of public holidays

23 December 00:15

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced his intention to revise the approach to the formation of public holidays and memorial dates in Ukraine. He voiced the relevant instructions during his evening address, emphasizing that the war had revealed a number of problematic issues in the current calendar, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

According to the president, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, together with the government and representatives of the public, should develop proposals for new approaches to the formation of holidays and memorial dates.

Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk together with MPs have been entrusted with the coordination of the work.

“Among other things, I asked Ruslan, together with the MPs, government officials, and representatives of civil society, to prepare proposals for defining new and logical approaches to holidays and special days in our calendar,” the President said.

Why the revision was necessary

The President explained that the full-scale war had exposed a number of calendar conflicts. In particular:

  • the days of national tragedies sometimes coincide with professional holidays;
  • several different events occur simultaneously on some dates;
  • some of the dates were inherited from the Soviet era or the first years of independence and need to be rethought.

According to the Head of State, such combinations are incorrect and need to be streamlined.

What should be the new approach?

Zelenskyy emphasized that the calendar of public dates should be:

  • fair
  • understandable to the public;
  • correct from a moral and historical point of view.

As an example, he cited the transfer of Christmas to December 25, which, according to him, was accepted by society easily and without conflict.

“Just as the real Christmas was easily accepted – on December 25 – so should other dates be fair and correct,” the president said.
