Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants to appoint a representative for Belarus and plans to meet with several diplomats on this issue.
“I have not appointed a representative for Belarus. I want to appoint one. I want to meet with several diplomats. I want a strong person as representative for Belarus,” Zelensky said during a meeting with journalists, according to "Komersant Ukrainian" , citing Interfax-Ukraine.
He stressed that “the efforts of the democratic forces in Belarus must be supported.”
As reported, during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 22, Zelensky criticized the West for its lack of real assistance to the Belarusian people in their struggle for freedom, and on January 25, during a speech in Vilnius commemorating those who died during the January uprising, he addressed the Belarusian people: “You are a European people who will be together with all our peoples in unity, in our free Europe, in a peaceful Europe, in a strong Europe.” The president also thanked the Belarusian volunteers who are fighting for Ukraine’s independence and for a historic opportunity for their country.
On January 27, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga announced a new systematic approach to relations with the Belarusian democratic opposition and announced the appointment of a special representative authorized to liaise with democratic Belarusian forces.
