Greece and Ukraine have officially signed an agreement on the sale of natural gas to Ukraine. Deliveries will begin in January.
This was announced by the President of Ukraine during a briefing with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens on November 16, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to Mitsotakis, American liquefied natural gas will be supplied via the “south to north” route, from the port of Alexandroupolis in Greece to Odesa in Ukraine.
The President of Ukraine emphasized that this agreement is part of a large energy package for the winter, aimed at providing gas to the country despite Russia’s constant attacks on energy infrastructure.
“In fact, every night the Russians strike at our infrastructure… Our agreements with Greece today are an important part of a large energy package to provide Ukraine with gas,” Zelenskyy said.
He added that the supply of American liquefied natural gas through Greece would compensate for the destroyed gas production in Ukraine and strengthen the country’s energy security.
“Gas supplies will begin in January, and it is important that our first agreements will be implemented in the first quarter,” the president said.
In his turn, Mitsotakis reaffirmed his support for Ukraine and emphasized the strategic importance of the agreement.
“This is a new secure energy artery that runs from south to north, from Greece to Ukraine… Greece is becoming a hub for the supply of American liquefied natural gas to Central and Eastern Europe,” Mitsotakis said.
According to him, the gas artery will stretch from Alexandroupolis to Odesa. He added that the agreement will help Ukraine become independent of Russian gas and ensure the stability of the energy grid.
Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude to international partners, in particular the United States, for their assistance in implementing the project.
“We will be able to get energy from the United States through Greece, because this is really the kind of global infrastructure that exists in Greece,” the president said.
The agreements provide for both operational gas supplies in the first quarter of 2026 and long-term agreements aimed at strengthening the energy security of Ukraine and the entire region. According to Mitsotakis, Greece will continue to be a reliable ally of Ukraine and support its position in the international arena.
