Zelensky appoints acting head of the State Border Guard Service

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Valeriy Vavryniuk as interim head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the decree on the president’s website.

“Valeriy Pavlovych Vavryniuk, First Deputy Head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, shall temporarily act as the head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine,” the decree says.

It should also be noted that another decree was published, according to which Zelensky dismissed Serhiy Deynek from the post of head of the SBGS.

What is known about Valeriy Vavryniuk

Valeriy Vavryniuk was born on July 14, 1975, in the city of Khmelnytskyi. He is a participant in the hostilities in eastern Ukraine and was awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, III degree, and the Presidential Award “For Participation in the Anti-Terrorist Operation”.

In 2003-2008, he served in the border guard system, gradually holding a number of positions – from deputy commandant of the border commandant’s office to senior officer of the operational department of the headquarters of the Western Direction of the Border Troops of Ukraine and the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service.

In 2008-2014, he held senior positions in the border guard detachments of the Northern and Southern Regional Directorates of the SBGS.

In the period from December 2014 to July 2015, he held the position of Deputy Head of the Regional Directorate – Head of the Operational and Military Department of the Eastern Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

Until October 2019, he was appointed head of the border guard detachments in the Eastern and Western Regional Directorates, and also held positions in the staff of the Eastern Regional Directorate of the SBGS.

In 2019, he headed the Eastern Regional Directorate, and in 2023 was appointed Head of the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

Since October 20, 2025, he has served as the First Deputy Head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.
