On January 13, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree on a new package of sanctions against the Russian financial sector. The head of state said this in his evening address, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The decree on sanctions against the Russian financial sector covers 140 entities.

“Today I signed the documents on sanctions. A decree on sanctions against the financial sector of Russia. 140 different entities. We will continue to work with our partners to coordinate our pressure,” the Ukrainian leader said.

The President’s Office also published a corresponding decree on its website.

Decree No. 24 states that new sanctions have been imposed against both legal entities and individuals involved in the Russian economy. Sanctions against Russian legal entities and individuals will be in effect for 10 years.

The decree comes into force on the day of its publication.

In addition, Zelenskyy signed a bill on criminal liability for attempts to circumvent sanctions.

“Sanctions are one of the most effective tools to put fair pressure on Russia and all those who are associated with it or work for the war. This draft law will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine,” he added.

Earlier, EU ambassadors agreed on the 15th package of sanctions against Russia in response to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The package includes restrictions on even more people and companies. It also targets organizations in Russia and third countries that indirectly contribute to military and technological assistance to Russia by circumventing export restrictions.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, welcomed the introduction of the new sanctions and emphasized that the restrictions are primarily aimed at Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
