During the EU enlargement summit, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the United States to be open to the possibility of Ukraine using long-range weapons. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to him, such weapons are not only a defense tool but also an important factor in deterring Russian aggression.
What Zelensky said
The President emphasized that Ukraine needs the support of the United States and President Donald Trump personally in this matter:
“The United States should be open to the possibility of using long-range weapons. This is very important. Even as a deterrent, we must have it, use it. We need the support of the United States, we need the support of President Trump in this matter.”
Zelenskyy also noted that increased military support could create decisive pressure on Russia – along with a stronger sanctions policy.
As for sanctions
The President thanked the EU and the US for the sanctions already in place, but emphasized that secondary restrictions are needed, especially against the Russian energy sector:
“We need further, tougher sanctions against gas. And also against the nuclear generation of the Russian Federation.”
In his opinion, this will help reduce the Kremlin’s ability to produce missiles, which Russia continues to use against Ukraine.
Why this is important
Ukraine has repeatedly called on its Western partners to allow strikes on military targets in Russia with Western weapons.
Washington is still cautious about such steps, fearing an escalation of the conflict.
Zelenskyy’s speech comes amid expectations of a political reset in the United States after the inauguration of Donald Trump, whose position on the war in Ukraine remains ambiguous.
