A magnetic storm has engulfed the Earth: when will space weather improve and is there a threat to health?
3 February 07:55
A geomagnetic storm is continuing on Earth, which may affect the well-being of weather-sensitive people. However, according to forecasts, space weather will stabilize on February 3, and the intensity of geomagnetic fluctuations will decrease to a minimum level. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Meteoagent.
Magnetic storm forecast for February 3–4
According to current estimates by experts, on February 3, the K-index will be 2 points, which corresponds to the “green” level of geomagnetic activity. This indicator means a weak magnetic storm, which has no significant impact on health and usually does not cause deterioration in well-being.
On Wednesday, February 4, solar activity is also forecast at 1.7 points, meaning that the geomagnetic situation will remain stable.
Experts emphasize that forecasts may be adjusted, as data on solar activity is updated every three hours.
What is the K-index and when is a storm dangerous?
Geomagnetic activity is measured on a planetary K-index scale from 0 to 9:
- 0–3 — weak activity (green level);
- 4 — moderate fluctuations;
- 5 and above — powerful magnetic storm that can affect health and equipment operation.
The current index of 2 is not considered dangerous.
Magnetic storms and well-being: what you need to know
Meteorological sensitivity is not a disease, but a complex of reactions of the body to changes in the environment. A small number of people have a genetic predisposition to it, but according to various estimates, 50–70% of the Earth’s population is occasionally affected by weather and geomagnetic factors.
Magnetic storms usually last 2–3 days. Every person’s body reacts to them because cells have an electrical charge, but most people do not notice this — humanity has generally adapted to solar activity.
Sensitivity to geomagnetic fluctuations is most often observed in:
- elderly people;
- people with chronic cardiovascular diseases.
Possible symptoms
During periods of increased solar activity, the following may occur:
- sleep disturbances;
- decreased concentration;
- increased fatigue;
- irritability or aggression;
- headaches.
How to feel better during a magnetic storm
Experts advise the following during days of geomagnetic fluctuations:
- eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of clean water;
- get enough sleep;
- take daily walks for at least 30 minutes — they help stabilize the nervous system;
- take a shower or visit a sauna: according to observations, people who regularly visit a sauna are less likely to react to temperature and geomagnetic changes.
