A three-day magnetic storm hits the Earth: how to protect yourself

29 April 2024 16:55

Today, 29 April, a powerful magnetic storm has hit the Earth, which may affect the health of weather-dependent people. This is evidenced by the forecast of solar and geomagnetic activity of the Space Weather Prediction Centre of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"

It will last for three days (until 1 May inclusive). Today, it will be particularly strong – solar activity with a K-index of 5 (red level) is expected, which corresponds to a severe storm that can affect people’s health.

On Tuesday, 30 April, its activity will decrease to K-index 3 (green level), but on Wednesday, 1 May, it will increase again to K-index 4 (yellow level), which is a significant magnetic disturbance.

Therefore, weather-dependent people should take care of their health during solar flares.

Magnetic storms can affect people, animals, and electronic devices. They have a particular impact on those who have

  • weather dependence – storms cause pain, dizziness, nausea, irritability, sleep disturbances, and exacerbation of chronic diseases;
  • cardiovascular diseases – in people with them, storms can cause an increase in blood pressure, arrhythmia,
  • angina pectoris;
  • neuropsychiatric diseases – storms can exacerbate symptoms.

What is a magnetic storm?

A magnetic storm is a phenomenon caused by regular flares and explosions on the Sun, which results in a large amount of solar energy. It contains charged particles (protons and electrons) that move rapidly in different directions, including towards the Earth. When it reaches the Earth’s magnetosphere, activity known as magnetic storms or solar storms occurs.

To characterise magnetic storms, a power level index known as the K-index is used. Fluctuations in the range of K-index 1 to K-index 4 are considered insignificant and are often not noticed by the Earth’s inhabitants. Storms exceeding K-index 5 are classified as red-level storms, which can have a significant impact on human life and lead to a general deterioration in health. In addition, during high-level magnetic storms, communications such as mobile phone towers, satellites, radio frequencies and GPRS may experience interference. During magnetic storms that reach a K-index of 7 or 8, auroras can be seen.

How to help your body during magnetic storms:

  • Follow the daily routine and diet: sleep well, eat healthy and wholesome food.
  • Avoid spicy, salty, fatty foods and alcohol, and reduce coffee consumption.
  • Drink herbal teas and plenty of water.
  • Walking in the fresh air, light exercise can improve your condition and give you energy.
  • Avoid conflict situations and stress.
  • People with chronic illnesses are advised to get more rest and take the necessary medications with them.
  • A contrast shower in the morning can help to revive, and a bath in the evening can help to relax.
