The Ukrainian women’s team dramatically loses to Japan at the Volleyball World Championship

The Ukrainian women’s volleyball team suffered its second defeat at the 2025 World Championship, losing to Japan in a tense match with a score of 2:3 in sets. The second round match of the group stage ended only in a tiebreaker after almost three hours of competition. After this, the Ukrainian team has only a theoretical chance of reaching the tournament playoffs, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The match started well for the Ukrainians, who got off to a good start and for a long time controlled the course of the first set. However, the Japanese were able to even the score and even take the lead 24:22. The Ukrainians showed their character, restored parity and won a long set 27:25.
The Blue and Yellow played the second game even more convincingly, creating a solid eight-point lead at the start of the set. Although by the finish the difference was somewhat reduced, the Ukrainians confidently brought the game to a victorious end – 25:20.
The third set was the turning point of the match. After an equal struggle at the beginning of the game, Japan took the initiative and created a nine-point lead. Despite the Ukrainian players’ attempts to reduce the difference, the Asian volleyball players kept the advantage until the end – 25:20.

The fourth game was held in a nervous atmosphere with a constant change of the leader. Ukraine first led by three points, then lost the initiative, but in the end managed to equalize the score 24:24. However, two consecutive errors cost the Ukrainians the set – 24:26.
In the decisive tiebreak, the Ukrainian team went ahead three times, but could not keep the advantage and lost with a difference of four points.
This is the second defeat of the Ukrainian team at the tournament after losing to the reigning world champions from Serbia in the opening match.
The Ukrainian women will play their final group stage match on August 27 at 4:30 p.m. against Cameroon. For the match to have tournament significance for Ukraine, Cameroon must defeat the reigning world champions Serbia today.
