A woman at the helm: Bulgaria has a new president
23 January 16:43
On January 23, the Constitutional Court of Bulgaria officially transferred presidential powers to Iliana Yotova following the voluntary resignation of Rumen Radev. She became the first female head of state in the country’s history.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Novinite.
Court decision and change of leadership
The Constitutional Court of Bulgaria unanimously accepted Rumen Radev’s resignation. The judges confirmed that the president’s decision was voluntary and did not require further investigation, as it was not a matter of impeachment.
The official change of power took place today. At 4 p.m., Rumen Radev solemnly left the residence through the ceremonial entrance, and at the same time, the powers automatically passed to Iliana Yotova.
The new president does not need to take the oath of office again, as she already did so in 2021 as vice president.
The end of the Radev era
Former Air Force commander Rumen Radev led the country for nine years. He became the first president in Bulgaria’s democratic history to leave office early.
Radev is expected to announce the launch of his own political project in the near future to participate in the early parliamentary elections scheduled for the fall.
Iliyana Yotova’s career
Yotova began her public activity in the media sphere, working as a journalist. She later joined the Bulgarian Socialist Party.
Since 2017, Iliana Yotova has been a constant companion to Rumen Radev, serving as vice president. Her experience in international politics and deep knowledge of European institutions have made her a key figure in the president’s administration.
