Sanae Takaichi has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Japan, becoming the first woman in the country’s history to head the government.

This was reported by the Japanese news agency NHK, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The lower house of the Japanese parliament voted in favor of Takaiti. She received 237 votes out of 465, which allowed her to win the first round of voting.

“Today will be a starting point for us to strengthen the Japanese economy and transform Japan into a country that can take responsibility for future generations. I look forward to working together on this,” she was quoted as saying.

The new prime minister is expected to hold her first press conference on Tuesday evening. She may also announce the formation of her cabinet.

Prior to this, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan agreed to form a coalition with the opposition Japan Renewal Party, which guaranteed the election of LDP leader Takaiti.

What is known about Sanae Takaichi

Takaiti is a political veteran who once held several cabinet positions and was a supporter of the late Shinzo Abe’s Abenomics economic policy. Now she will replace Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

According to experts, the new leader inherits the general line of the ruling party, which faces geopolitical threats and tense relations with the United States due to duties on important export industries and defense commitments.

Interestingly, Tahiti has less than two weeks to prepare for US President Donald Trump’s visit to Japan.
