Rising prices for greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine: what’s behind the trend
19 October 14:15
Ukrainian producers are intensively raising selling prices for tomatoes
This was reported by analysts of the EastFruit project, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
It should be reminded that the upward price trend in this segment in the domestic market of Ukraine was established last week. Market analysts attribute this situation to a rather significant decrease in the supply of these products on the market due to the seasonal factor amid a rather high demand for greenhouse vegetables.
Thus, at the moment, these products are already on sale in the range of 70-80 UAH/kg ($1.68-1.92/kg), which is on average 37% more expensive than at the end of the last working week.
According to market participants, the supply of new batches of tomatoes from local greenhouse plants is currently quite small and unstable. Thus, in most stationary greenhouse plants, the ripening of vegetables has slowed down significantly due to the cold snap in Ukraine, and the supply of these products from greenhouses has stopped altogether. Moreover, sellers have not yet been able to compensate for the shortage of local greenhouse vegetables with imported products.
As a result, Ukrainian greenhouse plants are currently selling tomatoes at an average price 16% higher than in the second half of October 2024. However, key market players note that the rise in price of local products has already begun to provoke an increase in supplies from the foreign market.
