Ukraine has lost a MiG-29 fighter jet. This was announced on 16 August by former Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to him, no one was injured.

“Unfortunately, we lost a MiG-29 today. Fortunately, everyone is alive and well. It‘s war,” Ignat wrote.

It should be noted that a little earlier, Russian public media published a video showing the Russian Armed Forces allegedly destroying a Ukrainian fighter jet at an airbase in the Dnipro region.

The video footage shows a fire and an explosion in the aircraft. After that, the occupiers also showed the detonation of shells for the fighter jet.

As a reminder, the MiG-29 is a fourth-generation Soviet multi-role fighter jet. It was the main multi-role fighter aircraft of the Warsaw Pact and the USSR in the 1980s. It is currently in service in many countries around the world, including Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Air Force received 245 MiG-29s after the collapse of the USSR in 1992. The MiG-29, together with the Su-27, is the main fighter aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force. The MiG-29 fighter’s potential allows it to be used both for air defence and air combat missions and for striking ground (surface) targets. As of 2011, the Ukrainian Armed Forces had a total of 80 MiG-29 aircraft of various modifications in service. Domestic enterprises are upgrading these fighters to the MiG-29MU1 standard.
