South Korea’s intelligence service has confirmed the capture of a wounded North Korean soldier by Ukrainian troops, the first recorded case of its kind. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Yonhap News Agency.
“Thanks to real-time information exchange with an intelligence organization of a friendly country, (we) confirmed the capture of a wounded North Korean soldier and plan to carefully study further developments,”
– the National Intelligence Service said in a brief statement.
The confirmation came after Ukrainian military news portal Militarny reported on Thursday that Ukrainian forces had captured the soldier during operations in the Kursk region of Russia’s frontline. The exact date of the incident was not specified.
A photo of the allegedly captured North Korean soldier, who was apparently wounded, was circulated on Telegram. Details about the soldier’s condition and status remain unknown.
If the information is confirmed, this will be the first time that Ukrainian forces have captured a North Korean soldier who participated in combat.
According to South Korean officials, about 11,000 North Korean troops have already been sent to Russia, and there are signs of preparations for further deployment of troops and military equipment.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this week that North Korea had lost more than 3,000 soldiers in the Kursk region.

Cooperation between the DPRK and Russia
on June 19, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin paid his first visit to North Korea in 24 years. During this visit, he signed an agreement on a “comprehensive strategic partnership” between the two countries with DPRK leader Kim Jong Un. After the signing, Putin noted that this agreement provides for assistance in case of aggression against one of the parties. The agreement was later ratified by the parliaments of both countries. It explicitly provides for military assistance:
“If one of the parties is subjected to an armed attack by any state or several states and thus finds itself in a state of war, the other party will immediately provide military and other assistance by all means at its disposal in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter and in accordance with the laws of the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”
After the visit, it became known that the DPRK was supplying Russia with artillery shells, which the latter was using in the war against Ukraine. As of mid-October, their number was approaching 3 million, which accounted for half of all the shells that Russia had fired against Ukraine.
Later, it became known that the DPRK had sent up to 11,000 soldiers to help Russia in the fighting in the Kursk region. on December 23, President Zelensky said that more than 3,000 of them had already been killed or wounded.
