International Day of Credit Unions

Every year on the third Thursday of October, the world celebrates International Credit Union Day.

This day was first celebrated on 17 January 1927 at the initiative of the American Credit Union League in Massachusetts, but the tradition did not find active support. In 1948, at the suggestion of the National Association of Credit Unions of the United States of America, the celebration was renewed and scheduled for the third Thursday of October each year.

World Trauma Day

Every year, on 17 October, World Trauma Day is celebrated around the world.

The event was first held in 2011 in New Delhi. According to WHO statistics, injuries of all kinds are the leading cause of death and disability around the globe.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

This landmark event began in 1992 and is celebrated annually on 17 October.

The purpose of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is to draw the attention of the international community to the most vulnerable segments of the world’s population and to remind them that poverty is a violation of the human right to a decent life and that poverty must be fought.

World Day of Organ Donation and Transplantation

Every year on 17 October, World Organ Donation and Transplantation Day is celebrated.

Since 2005, the WHO has proclaimed World Organ Donation and Transplantation Day. It is held annually on 17 October. This day has become part of an alarming observation: in 2005, only 4,238 organ transplants were performed, while almost 12,000 patients were in need of transplants.

What is the religious holiday on 17 October?

On 17 October, according to the new church calendar (30 October, according to the old style), Orthodox Christians commemorate the silverless martyrs Cosmas and Damian of Arabia and their brothers, the martyrs Leontes, Anfim and Eutropius.

Today is also the Day of Remembrance of the Prophet Hosea. He lived in the eighth century before the birth of Christ. The prophet Hosea left behind a book of prophetic messages.

The national holiday on 17 October is Hosea the Wheelwright. On this day, our ancestors used to take the wheels off their summer carts, repair them and bury them until spring, and then take out their sleds.

Folk signs and traditions for 17 October

Our ancestors had many interesting signs for this day:

  • they looked at what day it was: not all the trees had shed their leaves yet, which meant a long winter;
  • the day is warm – the winter will be mild;
  • a lot of snow has fallen – flooding is possible in spring;
  • the roads are still muddy – it will be warm until mid-winter.

  • Don’t have a fight or quarrel.
  • Do not borrow or lend money.
  • Do not neglect prayers.
  • Do not do heavy physical work.
